Fake it till you break it

The pros and cons of Premature Authority in the post-truth social media sphere.

The worst piece of design advice I’ve encountered on Instagram relates to titles.

“You can out-earn every real designer in your space by faking it as a consultant. Nobody really checks.”

@ProfitableDesigner (via Instagram)

A screen grab of the offending post.

A profitable designer or self appointed guru?

(Nobody checks)

This isn’t total bullshit. I’m not convinced it’s sage advice either.

Calling yourself a consultant is great advice if the end goal is to become a brand consultant, or a business consultant. Perhaps good advice if the end goal is to become a graphic-design consultant...

If the idea is to be a ‘profitable designer’, (the account handle suggests that is the goal) then I am at a loss for words. Most consultants I know don’t do the actual graphic design.
